The Training Workshop on Fish Catch Assessment

​On morning of July 20, 2015, at the training hall of the headquarter of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (Kbal Thnal), H.E Khov Meas, Deputy Secretary General of Tonle Sap Authority, High Representative of the Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology and Chairman of Tonle Sap Authority, leaded the training workshop on "Fish Catch Assessment" which was lasted for two days from 20 - 21 July 2015. Participants attending this workshop were staffs from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, Tonle Sap Authority, Cambodian National Mekong Committee, and experts specializing in assessing fish catch of MRC in totally of 35 people. This training workshop was held in order to understand the system of fisheries management and effective methods.
Taking this opportunity, H.E informed the participants that the initiatives of this training was a part of the implementation of the Action Plan of the Secretariat of Tonle Sap Authority (2015- 2017) on strengthening the capacity of study methods of fisheries which was one of other the activities in accordance with the roles and responsibilities of Tonle Sap Authority as the research institution and to prepare policy for the royal government. So far, the General Secretariat of Tonle Sap Authority had actively strived to fulfill core roles in conducting research studies on sectors, including the study on agriculture, fisheries resources business, fisheries lot conservation, water quality, environment, the monitor on exploitation situation of flooded area 3, the conflict interest and benefit of natural resources consumption in Tonle Sap Lake area and its related areas. Moreover, capacity building for civil servants is also an important, indispensable factor to increase new knowledge in accordance with modernization of technology and science, especially the use of technology (IT) and new modeling for research studies.

Practically, the training which was lasted for 2 days was really important to build the capacity and provide the knowledge and experiences and specific purpose of the study. The training workshop presented to participants about:
1.    Evaluation of fish catch by fishing lot equipment in Phnom Penh and
Kandal province
2.    Evaluation of fish catch by family-size fishing equipment in the provinces
around Tonle Sap Area
3.    Evaluation techniques of fish catch by mobilizing fishing equipment
4.    Case study on fish catch assessment with fishermen in Kampong Chhnang Province.  

This training workshop was expected that the participants will gain further knowledge about (1) the techniques in assessing fish catch by lot fishing equipment and mobilizing fishing equipment, (2) knowledge on fish catch assessment, and (3) to assess fish catch more effectively.
H.E had also appealed and hoped that the participants would have a clear understanding about the context of research on fish catch in order to acquire new knowledge for future study and to mutually share experiences in order to increase knowledge on cooperation to improve capacity of officials and institutions.​
